Recently Daniel Ortega sent his troops to literally ´invade´Costa Rica to take over a piece of land he decided on his own belonged to Nicaragua. I could consider this to maybe be a misunderstanding of territorial boundries if Daniel Ortega hadn´t been guilty of doing it before to another country, Honduras, Colombia, and well El Salvador...
The International Court determined in that case filed in 1999 that
The islands Bobel Cay, South Cay, Savanna Cay and Port Royal Cay, together with all other islands, cays, rocks, banks and reefs claimed by Nicaragua which lie north of the 15th parallel are under the sovereignty of the Republic of Honduras.
In 1986 there were several incidents that went before the International court that involved armed conflict on the borders between Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Most of these being inciated by Nicaragua or El Salvador.
In fact, we find that Nicaragua has had quite a bit of trouble over the years in their complaints that are unfounded or caused by the country itself. In 1984, Nicaragua filed a complaint in the international court against the United States for taking defensive action against Nicaragua when it acted in defense of Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador because the country was consistently invading the borders of the three countries.
What Ortega wants is to build a canal that would permit endless drug trafficking to the US from Venezuela through his ports. He is a member of ALBA and it seems that ALBA has been a bit of heartburn for everyone in Latin America that is not a member as well as the United States.
Costa Rica has taken their case to the OAS and are getting a bit of feeling of what it was like last year to be Honduras, except they at least get to make their case before the OAS. There was a resolution finding in favor of Costa Rica and ordering Nicaragua to remove their soldiers from Costa Rican territory, but Ortega has stubbornly refused to obey this order and said instead that he will remove his country from the OAS. In fact, he claims that he is the victim of a conspiracy of Colombia with the OAS. The man sounds more delusional as time goes on. He has threatened to make official complaint to the International courts about Costa Rica..surely he knows he is going to lose if he has a brain in his head.
I have to wonder what the international court or the OAS plans to do about a man that has essentially invaded another country with his troops and then claims he is combating narcotics trafficking, when he is a drug trafficker himself, and has done so violating an international boundary and maintains troops in a country that does not belong to him. Costa Rica is not considered a narcostate, his country is...he needs to work within the boundaries of his own country and stop trying to steal every inch of land that he can from the territories around him.
